Gaining the world and losing your soul

7 Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of a hireling?

Job 7 v 1

Jesus Christ asked a very profound question to those around him while he was here on earth. I find that question still applies to us in this modern era. His question was:

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mark 8 v 36-37

We live in a success driven world whereby we are made to feel as though we are lagging behind in life unless we drive the latest car, live in a beautiful house in an affluent area, go on at least 3 holidays a year and have our kids going to the best schools. Many of us are borrowing beyond our means to sustain a lifestyle that is causing us sleepless nights and deep troubles in our marriages. For those gazing at our lives from the outside, we appear to have gained the best of what life has to offer however, they are oblivious to the fact that our worlds are void and empty of any substance and oftentimes no one to share the joys of life with.

Many have amassed wealth, success and happiness through dubious practices and can no longer look at themselves in the mirror due to the guilt eating them up. They mask their torment by further spending on empty material things that do not satisfy the soul.

King Solomon a man full of God given wisdom concludes that everything we are pursuing in this world is vanity and chasing after the wind.

14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Ecclesiastes 1 v 14 (NIV)

You see, this world is passing away and the things in it. There will come a time for every living soul to leave this world and give an account to its maker on the things done on earth. Many came before and after us but are no longer around and it’s not because they moved locality, but because they are dead and gone.

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

Ecclesiastes 3 v 2

If they are no more then we must ask ourselves where are they now and where will we go when we also leave the land of the living? With all these realisations starring us in the face, the wisest thing we can all do is invest in the things that are eternal.

Jesus Christ, the solution to all the dilemmas we would ever face adviced us to:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 KJV

In short, we are to put God and His Kingdom above all things and He will, in turn, take care of all our needs. One might ask what the kingdom of God is but the Bible makes us understand in Romans 14 v 7 that it’s “righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit“. I know it’s not easy to pursue this especially when we are constantly driven by what we see but the Bible says in Romans 1 v 17 that the “just shall live by faith”. We learn of the Lord being our shepherd in Psalms 23 and as long as we go to Him, He will take care of us. Each day we must strive to push forward to please God and attain His perfect will for us. It doesn’t matter if we failed yesterday or today, as long as the grace of God is available to us, let’s use each day as an opportunity to draw closer to our Lord and Heavenly Father. The Bible says in Proverbs 24 v 16 that:

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Dear reader, have you considered your soul recently? Are you investing in your soul and its eternal resting place? Hebrews 9 v 27 states:

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

My question to all of us reading this post is, what preparations are we making for our souls? Are we prudently using the time we have to pursue God and Heavenly things? It is eternally true that JESUS CHRIST ALONE gives LIFE and Saves! Let’s cling to Him while there is still time to do so.

Beloved, I write this post not because I am perfect or have attained the mark set by Christ but because I am being challenged to be a wise bride of Christ (Matthew 25 v 1-13). I hope you too are challenged with me as we review and take stock of our lives and where we are heading. There is no mercy and grace once our souls leave this earth and for that purpose, we must make the words of Jesus Christ in John 9 v 4 our motto every day:

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is the day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

Beloved of the Lord I encourage you to give your all to Jesus Christ and make Him the Lord and Saviour your life. Make up your mind that no matter how much it costs you here on earth, you will follow Him.

May God strengthen and give you and I the grace to enter the narrow road and gate which leads to eternal life.

Amen
